In late January, the moss released the exciting 4-track EP, Insomnia. Not to be confused with the non-flowering plant, the indie-rock band based out of Utah consists of Willie Fowler (drums), Tyke James (vocals/guitar), Caiden Jackson (bass), and Addison Sharp (guitar). Built with contagious rhythms and mesmerizing guitar, the moss encapsulates the complexities surrounding growing up, living life, and falling in love throughout the Insomnia EP.

After teasing the song on socials in late 2022, the moss released the lead single “Insomnia,” which garnered a lot of attention in the indie-rock community. The song has an insanely vibrant energy that plays on the band’s origin in the surf-rock genre. “Insomnia” being the first track of the EP shows off the moss’ growth in production and powerful dynamic between the band. With a fast-paced punch, the song stays true to its name in developing the feeling of “Insomnia.”

“Blink,” the second single off Insomnia, easily shifts tone from the high-energy title track without losing any conviction. The combination of vocals and guitar creates an experience in this song that is genuinely so magnetizing. From the guitar and bass to vocals and beat, each aspect of “Blink” truly radiates every ounce of struggle and pain the moss are trying to convey. The lyrics, “If I lose you/ I may never love again“ and “I'm scared of the real world/ But I'm not the anxious type” highlight the moss’ impressive mastery in connecting with their listeners and fans. The lighthearted music video for “Blink” further authenticates the band’s playful spirit when it comes to creativity and being an entertaining group of musicians.

The next two songs “Carousel” and “Chaparral” differ from the former two, but are consistent between each other to round out Insomnia EP as a whole. These songs sound more exploratory than the moss’ past releases. Both delve further into the band’s groovy, laid-back vibe, while “Chaparral” pushes the more up-tempo enthusiasm. “Carousel” specifically illustrates Tyke’s vocal range, and the band’s ability to mess around with mid-song pace changes, intriguing synths and sound, and beautiful guitar melodies. With an engaging bass and drum flow, “Chaparral” is a refreshing ending to wrap up Insomnia.

As their first music release of 2023, the moss are making a statement with the band’s sonic progressions and development. Well-known for their electric live performances, the moss are currently touring North America with fellow indie-rock bands Future.Exboyfriend, The Kaleidoscope Kid, and The Olson Brothers.
