Alternative Duo The Night Alone Gets Personal with Single, "My Sweater"

The latest track from The Night Alone, “My Sweater” is an entrancing combination of indie-pop and synth-laden lines. The friends-since-high-school duo, Vincent “Vinny” Manzi and Christian Koller, deliver some of their most personal lyrics regarding anxiety and expectations within this dynamic track.

“‘My Sweater’ probably has some of my most personal lyrics. I have anxiety, like so many do, and sometimes that manifests as having choice-paralysis over decisions, even small ones, as if it’ll make some huge difference to my life - in most cases it doesn’t. It’s also about anxiety over the future, the pressure of knowing what you’re doing as you move on with your life. In this way, it’s about a general vulnerability and just opening up about my insecurities.” - Christian Koller

Reminiscent of The 1975, the track is a layered soundscape filled with driving instrumentation and awash with hazy vocals. The writing process began with Manzi writing guitars and expanding the song by adding drums. He then brought it to Koller who filled out the bass line and added the bridge.

After initial attempts to write lyrics that perfectly fit the musical soundscape, the song was pushed aside for about three years. Koller eventually returned to the track and, in one sitting, wrote some of his most personal lyrics. Delving into topics of personal and societal expectations, self discovery and anxiety, the song delivers the perfect amount of relatable vulnerability.

The pair have never been tied down to genre, drawing influence from pop, rock, indie, electronic, R&B, and even classical music. “My Sweater” is greatly inspired by 2010s alternative sounds that the pair grew up listening to.

Reflecting on the song’s personal lyrics, Manzi notes, “This chorus is all about expectation. The part that really gets me is, ‘Learn to live, take a fascination in yourself / learn to love for reasons more than just might as well.’ I think we kind of glorify the ‘goals’ in life and try to rush it all. Why give in to expectations?”
