Em Beihold On Her Latest Single, "Rollercoasters Make Me Sad" And The Upcoming Tour With Lewis Capaldi

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Em Beihold’s love affair with music began at the tender age of six and has flourished ever since. With a background in jazz and classical piano, the Los Angeles Native has crafted a nuanced signature style that has taken the world by storm. In 2022, Beihold’s platinum-selling hit “Numb Little Bug”, which amassed over 500 million global streams, helped her claim the number-one spot on the Billboard Emerging Artists Chart.

Beihold's meteoric rise only accelerated with the release of her EP Egg In The Backseat, which earned her widespread acclaim from publications such as The New York Times, Stereogum, and V Magazine. Not content to rest on her laurels, Beihold also lent her mesmerizing vocals to a duet version of Stephen Sanchez’s, “Until I Found You,” which has amassed over 230 million Spotify streams and counting.

Now, with her latest single "Rollercoaster Makes Me Sad," Beihold continues to offer a poignant and unflinching look at the human experience, and in doing so, she's cementing her place as one of the scene’s most exciting artists.

Recently, I had the pleasure of interviewing the Los Angeles native through a press conference organized by 1824 to chat about her artistic journey over these years, her new single, and her upcoming tour with Lewis Capaldi.

With viral hits under her belt already, Em’s new track is sure to tug at the heartstrings of anyone who’s ever felt the highs and lows of the music industry. Titled “Rollercoasters Make Me Sad,” the song is a powerful exploration of her anxieties about the transience of success. Born from a conversation Beihold had with her collaborators about the parallels between theme parks and the music industry, this one is a hauntingly beautiful ode to the ups and downs of life. As she explained during the interview, she has always been fascinated by the way rollercoasters can elicit such extreme emotions in people. While there are some riders that often scream with excitement as they plunge down steep drops and whip around sharp turns, Beihold finds herself feeling numb and disconnected from the experience.

She realized that this feeling of detachment was all too familiar to her as a musician as the pressure to maintain her success and stay relevant is ever-present. It’s an emotion that she tried to capture in “Rollercoasters Make Me Sad,” which she wrote just after returning from a tour. Despite her exhaustion, Beihold scheduled an impromptu session with her collaborators, and worked on the lyrics and the melody of the song, drawing on her own experiences to create something that is truly authentic and powerful. The result is a beautiful ballad that captures the bittersweet nature of chasing one’s dreams and the rollercoaster ride that is the music industry.

“I feel the pressure of, like, how do I make sure this moment stays?” she explains.

Just like many rising artists, Beihold is currently navigating the thrilling yet daunting waters of sudden success. With her latest viral hit with Stephen Sanchez, she admits to feeling the pressure of maintaining momentum while staying true to her artistry. “It’s really important to definitely stay grounded, keep working, and have a community of people that you love and that love you, around you,” she advises.

As she gears up to hit the road with Lewis Capaldi, she mentioned how she approaches each tour with a blend of excitement and anxiety. Rehearsals take up the bulk of her preparation time, and while she may not be a natural when it comes to fashion, she's learning to embrace it as an essential part of her tour routine. This time around, however, she's adding something new to the mix: a focus on fitness. By building up her endurance, she hopes to conquer her stage fright and give fans the high-energy performance they've come to expect from her. With her commitment to improving her stage presence in each and every way possible, fans can expect nothing but the best from Beihold on tour with Lewis Capaldi.

Coupled with a distinct perspective on life and an unwavering passion for music, it’s evident that Em Beihold is prepared to make a significant impact on the music industry. Despite the challenges that may arise on this unpredictable journey, she remains anchored by the support of her devoted fanbase and community and a steadfast commitment to authenticity. With infectious pop hooks and a blend of honesty and vulnerability in her songwriting, Beihold is poised to make an indelible mark on the music industry and we can't wait to see what’s next for her.
