Flipturn Begins a New Era with the Release of "Playground"

flipturn by Amanda Laferriere

For the first release in two years, flipturn starts off strong with the single, “Playground.” The band gives us a look into what is to come with their upcoming album and the start of a new era. The single deals with the reality of maturing and losing the innocence you spend your whole childhood enjoying. Following a slow start to the track, it picks up and gives listeners a feeling of nostalgia. It shows the progress the band has made since the 2015 days of practicing in a garage in Fernandina Beach.

“Growing up has a way of taking all that away. You learn through trial and error while unknowingly laying the bricks below you. New things feel a little less shiny and the weight of your world pushes a little harder down on you. At some point, you realize you forget what it felt like to be a kid. That’s when it becomes easy to romanticize it, but a lot harder to shrug away the sobering thoughts of your adult life.” - Lead guitarist, Tristan Duncan

The music video for the single is truly an extension of the song. It doesn’t try too hard to make it into something it isn’t and might even make you resonate with the song even more. It makes you miss those euphoric moments you experience when you are young. There is a magic feeling in the ending of the song, which they translate into the video. They start to ride into the air, which feels almost like a cathartic release, and into a summer night. The ending scene is perfect to this feeling of childhood and that belief you have of pretending.

The band is currently on tour with Wilderado, and will be joining Mt. Joy and Rainbow Kitten Surprise on tour later this year. In addition to those tours, flipturn will be performing at various festivals including Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza. All of those tour dates can be found here
