Lizzy McAlpine Debuts the Stunning and Heartbreaking "five seconds flat"

I called you again to see if you listened to Lizzy McAlpine’s new album yet? You haven’t? Huh, what a shame… Is it an ego thing, maybe? No? Well, that’s weird. I know that you hate to be lame. It would literally take you five seconds flat to press play on the album.

Lizzy McAlpine’s debut album, five seconds flat, follows a beautiful and emotionally rich 14-song track list. With features including FINNEAS, Jacob Collier, Ben Kessler, and Laura Elliott, the album does not miss a single beat of wicked creativity and intrigue. The indie-pop singer dives into the journey through her own heartbreak using melodies and lyricism to bring us with her throughout the album.

“Doomsday,” the first song on the record, flawlessly highlights McAlpine’s mesmerizing vocals. The song is a great representation of how her music flows around different genres, and creates a production level that is vibrant, diverse, and emotionally charged all at once. Moving through each song, McAlpine seamlessly transitions from one track to the next. The whole album consists of a constant flow that keeps you wholly invested through each lyric, each beat, and each song until the next one begins.

Some songs on five seconds flat feature intense synths and guitar solos, specifically “an ego thing,” “firearm,” and “all my ghosts.” Whereas songs such as “erase me (ft. Jacob Collier),” “called you again,” “chemtrails,” and “ceilings” contain an acoustic guitar, inspiring vocals, and raw feelings. Each song undoubtedly portrays a flare of uniqueness that can only be pinned down to McAlpine’s exclusive energy and production.

You can genuinely feel each unrestrained emotion, whether it be anger, sadness, or confidence within her songwriting. Every single track can be attributed to an aspect of heartbreak and growth, which McAlpine doesn’t shy away from sharing within the melody and lyrics. She is utterly powerful, personal, and passionate through every second of the album.

Working with Gus Black, McAlpine also debuted a short film accompanying the release of the album. Containing music from multiple songs off five seconds flat, the short film takes us through the journey of McAlpine’s album, and recreates the heartbreak in real time. The film not only consists of captivating locations and camera work, but features dialogue, interactions, and connecting moments that transition from each music video to the next.

This record is brilliantly crafted from beginning to end. The entirety of the story we move through with McAlpine herself, is relatable and cohesively crafted. Insanely talented, creative, and artistic, Lizzy McAlpine is a force to be reckoned with in the music world.
