Valley Communicates the Pressures of the Music Industry in New Single, "SOCIETY"
Alternative-pop band, Valley released a new hit single “SOCIETY,” sending a lyrical message and a massive critique to the pressures of the music industry. Following the release of their popular track “Like 1999,” Valley has since been growing their reach on TikTok with 2.5 million views and over 100 million streams on their music. The quartet consisting of Alex DiMauro, Rob Laska, Karah James, and MIckey Brandolino have been creating and growing as a band in the music industry with their first EP released in 2016, This Room Is White.
Throughout the lyrics in “SOCIETY,” the band discusses the mechanics and opinions that keep the music industry consistent and moving, but also how this has an impact on the artists themselves and what that makes them feel. In lyrics such as, “I think I sold out when the sales went up,” and “Ironically, I wanna be a piece of everything I hate on TMZ,” Valley pinpoints the struggles of feeling like the band and/or artists are losing their identity and importance to the well-oiled machine of the music industry. The creative contempt that is evident throughout the lyrics, also identifies the hard points in a creative career where audience appeal begins to become more important than artistry and innovation.
“My head or my heart, the cash or the art.” - lyrics from “SOCIETY”
“SOCIETY” is an upbeat banger, though it has a very heavy meaning behind it. With a ton of solid guitar moments, and a fiercely intriguing beat, the song is a consistent swing of frustration mixed with rhythms to dance to. Similar to songs by LANY and COIN, the band creates epic guitar riffs, and ingenious synths. The bridge is uniquely crafted, and easily one of the best parts with a really interesting change of melody and lyrics combined.
After the release of “SOCIETY,” the band followed up with a music video for the new single a week later. The video has different moments that represent different aspects of an artist's life in the spotlight and within the music industry. From moments with the band talking to a label director, to paparazzi chasing them, to singing in a recording booth, to the band dancing in-sync in the middle of a field, the music video is a never ending change of scenery with tons of creative diversity and captivating moments.
Valley has garnered tons of recognition throughout the last couple of years. Gaining a 2020 JUNO Award nomination for Breakthrough Group of the Year, as well as appearing on viral charts in the U.S., Philippines, Korea, Japan, and more, Valley is anything but shy from success. They have joined and performed on sold out tours throughout North America, following both Lennon Stella and The Band CAMINO around the country. Valley will be joining COIN on the North American leg of their tour, and opening on 17 dates this fall.
