Tegan and Sara Return to Tour and Rock the Union Transfer

On a windy Wednesday evening, I was en route to shoot one of my favorite artists, Tegan and Sara. Tegan and Sara are a pop sister music group hailing from Calgary, Alberta. The duo has been a group since 1998 and are now dropping music under an independent label. I was very excited to see them live for the first time since my middle school days in Philadelphia.

While entering the venue, one thing that really intrigued me was the energy from the crowd. With shooting a lot of rap concerts as of recently, the crowds I’ve been used to were heavy with mosh pits and amped up by whatever Future or Lil Uzi Vert track the house DJ plays. For the first time in a while, I was hearing deep album cuts of Wallows, Phoebe Bridges, and Bartees Strange in a public area. This was such a fun concert transition that I needed. I also loved how the crowd easily sang the lyrics to these effortlessly while waiting for the beloved headliners.

Around 9:15 pm, Tegan and Sara took the stage. Even with the first song hiccups that the group was having (who can blame, they haven’t done a show in three years), the group delivered much nostalgia and fun throughout the night. One of my favorite moments was when they performed a version of their song “Boyfriend”. “Boyfriend” is one of the main singles off of their 2016 album, Love You to Death. ”Boyfriend” is also one of my top 10 favorite songs and was so amazing to finally hear it live. Another exciting moment from the show was when they played a slower version of the beloved track, “Closer”. While listening to this unique rendition, I started to reminisce on the first time hearing the track itself. I remember it was actually in 2012 on a Friday night, I couldn’t get to sleep. While twisting and turning in my bed, I decided to turn on the 8 inch TV in my small room and turned on the David Letterman Show. When I tuned in the television program, it was the last 5 minutes and the musical guest came on. The guest was, of course, Tegan and Sara, and they played that song for the late night performance. When hearing this, I was amazed by the soft voices and harmonizing sound, while intrigued with their stylish outfits. During that moment, I was hooked, and at the show, I felt as if I was transferred back into 2012.

In conclusion, with a new project in the works and a very entertaining amazon show that they have, it was really interesting to see the group performing and I would recommend them to any fan and music lover.
