If you are looking for a new artist to listen to in 2021, add Ula Blue to the list. On January 1st, she released “Carry On”, the first single off of her upcoming debut EP, fuck your projections

Growing up in Vermont, Ula was raised “tucked between farmland and the middle of nowhere.” In the past several years Ula has spent time living in Europe and NYC until last spring, when she decided to move back home to Vermont. Since then, in addition to working on her own music, she started a production company called Lunatic Productions LLC and is pursuing her master’s degree in music business.

Listening to “Carry On” creates what can only be described as a sonically psychedelic experience, making it bound to be stuck in your head for days. The nearly six-minute song strays away from your typical song structure (verse, pre-chorus, chorus, etc.), which speaks to the overall message of freedom. On the topic of the track’s message, Ula states, “The song itself is about perseverance, trusting your intuition and carrying on with enough faith in yourself to get through this screwed up world.”

What sticks out to me the most is the build to these simple, yet incredibly powerful lyrics: “freedom’s gonna break free.” It’s clear that Ula wrote this song as a way to let go of a painful past, noting, “I wrote this song in the winter of 2018 after a series of emotionally abusive relationships. It was my way of processing how my self-image had been impacted by people who were unable to really see me.”

Overall, “Carry On” sends a message of hope that I, and many others, need to hear. Produced and mixed by Carter Vail of Nashville’s Happy Camper Studios and mastered by Mostafa Zaghloul, “Carry On” is a strong introduction to Ula Blue, a name that will become familiar to many soon enough.
