Explorations of Human Emotion on The Trusted's, “Love and Suicide”

The Trusted have released their four track EP entitled Love and Suicide, in which they draw focus on various emotions throughout the entire project. Originally hailing from Southend-on-Sea, the group is made up of Tom Cunningham on vocals and guitar, Dave Batchelor on drums, Dale Holt-Mead on guitar, and Fin Cunningham on multiple instruments. Originally not intended to come together as an EP, the project came together right before lockdown and as the songs were produced, they lended themselves to becoming a collection. Drawing inspiration from the 90’s and British rock, Love and Suicide proves to be reminiscent of The Wallflowers and Gin Blossoms, living somewhere between the lines of rock and pop.

Track one is “The Innocent”, which covers the topic of the innocence of life; untainted and untouched. Powerful vocals and upbeat percussion are used to create a track that is nothing short of deserving the spot at the end of an emotional coming-of-age movie. Followed by “Horizontal Mind”, this song departs from the introduction by going in a different musical direction, drawing inspiration from punk rock and heavier alternative inspirations. Going along the theme with this EP, the range of human emotions is vast. These two songs seem to be fighting each other in terms of music and theme. While “The Innocent” speaks to the dreamers, “Horizontal Mind” speaks to the internal battles of worth and confidence.

Continuing the exploration of human emotions within the EP, the band covers fear and anxiety in the title track “Love and Suicide”. Taking internal struggles and turning them up a few notches, this song dives into the things humans cannot control. The track brings the listener to a stark realization that they are not the center of the universe, but rather a single piece within a whole. Rounding out the tracklist is the final track titled “Wild Love”. As a conclusion to the journey of the EP, this song describes feelings of wanting to escape reality; eventually causing the subject to run away.
