Saturn Lane Releases "Messed Up"

Musical talent, Saturn Lane, is a rising pop-artist and songwriter from New York City. The release of her new single, “MESSED UP,” on April 29th, propelled Lane into the 2021 music scene with an impressive song. With musical influences ranging from Ariana Grande to Adele to Cardi B, Saturn Lane does an amazing job in embodying the extensive pop music vibe within her new single. 

Many of the lyrics in the song speak out about the struggles Lane went through in a past relationship, including lines like, “anxiety, it got to me” and “was a burden to bear, so you left me there.” In discussing the origins behind “MESSED UP,” Lane posted on Instagram, “I was fed up with myself for the way my anxiety tampered with my interpersonal relationships and how that often led people to give up on me.” Seeing musical artists openly speaking out about mental health is refreshing, and Saturn Lane is doing just that. Within her new music, she is helping to normalize and express challenges with mental health. Through her songwriting and dealing with the challenges faced because of this, she “spent a lot of time learning about it and growing through it, so [her] music reflects that.” “MESSED UP” shows just how transparent Lane is willing to be with the world by talking about the struggles faced throughout her relationship, and also describing how she utilized her love for creating music to help overcome these challenges.

Although the lyrics have a deeper and more serious connotation, the vibe of “MESSED UP” itself is extremely vibrant with an upbeat chorus. The song starts out with a darker mood, followed by heavy synths that creates a really intense feeling. Lane’s vocal range and control is impressive, and is demonstrated with the faster-paced chorus. “MESSED UP” has these hypnotic layers and beats throughout, which made me listen over and over again to hear all of the different sounds she was able to incorporate during different moments. Despite having a more somber meaning behind the song, Lane does an amazing job in creating a contrasting vibe between lyrics and melody that made “MESSED UP,” an endlessly interesting song to listen to.
