The Los Angeles based alternative artist, KiNG MALA, kicked off 2021 with her first song release of the year titled “She Calls Me Daddy.” After garnering attention from a string of successful TikToks promoting her music, KiNG MALA dropped the song on April 8th, followed by a music video the next day. “She Calls Me Daddy” follows the narrative of KiNG MALA consistently trying to fight off men attempting to steal her girl. Throughout the song, we hear the power KiNG MALA ultimately has within her relationships, and how the men are constantly fighting a losing battle. The overall message of the song evokes feelings of being a full badass and aims to relay that same savage energy to the listeners.
KiNG MALA forces a declaration with the release of “She Calls Me Daddy,” claiming her sexuallity, and showing the world how talented and relentless she truly is. The song kicks off with an intense beat that captures the attention of the listener right from the start. Adding a flowing bassline with a bit of piano, the song begins to progress and highlight the story KiNG MALA is trying to convey. Although the tone may be easy-going, don’t be fooled - the lyrics are vibrantly passionate, and leave no room for anything other than women and non-binary empowerment. There is a twist at the end of the song which relies on different synths and guitars to create a whole different mood, leaving the listeners on a cliff-hanger and wanting more.
The music video for “She Calls Me Daddy” is an absolute vibe. KiNG MALA shows off her masculine and dark side throughout the video, but leaves a lot of light and color to contrast the difference between lyrics and musicality. There are different moments where the video cuts to create old school, VHS moments that create variation between parts of the video. Despite showing off her fierceness and powerful energy, KiNG MALA is also able to portray her carefree spirit throughout the video, which was a great contrast, working really well with the overall tone of the video and song.
Creating a song that can only be described as an ultimate banger, KiNG MALA is a phenomenal artist and lyricist entering 2021. “She Calls Me Daddy” is not only a statement song, but it is promoting confidence and strength among women and non-binary people. In speaking of the inspiration behind the song she explains, “I really just want to normalize queer relationships and empower womxn and non-binary folks and make them feel badass.” Being able to contrast between such powerful lyrics, but also conveying an easygoing tone is impressive, showing how KiNG MALA is a force to be reckoned with in the growing music industry and her blossoming career.
